FOR IMMEDIATE USE: Lend Lease and Green Energy Corp. join Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster
Research Triangle Region, N.C. – Two companies focused on sustainable energy development and deployment have joined the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC), the initiative of business, government, academic and nonprofit leaders working to accelerate the region’s cleantech economy.
Lend Lease, one of the world’s largest property, infrastructure and construction management firms, has joined the RTCC as a professional services member. Microgrid software provider Green Energy Corp. has joined as an entrepreneur member.
“Lend Lease deploys innovative technologies created by regional companies within its construction management practices and throughout its housing and commercial developments worldwide, and it develops clean technologies of its own. Green Energy Corp. helps position our region at the leading edge of the exploding microgrid market,” said Lee Anne Nance, RTCC managing director and executive vice president of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, which created and manages the RTCC. “We’re excited about the significant market opportunity both companies represent, as well as the knowledge they offer our cluster.”
For Lend Lease, RTCC membership is a way to closely connect with companies that share its business objectives as well as support economic growth in a region in which it has operated for more than 70 years, said James Stawniczy, head of Sustainability-Americas for Lend Lease.
“What the cleantech cluster is doing in this area is bringing together thought leadership and pushing the envelope of what is possible,” Stawniczy said. “As a company, we want to find ways to make our construction and development properties more sustainable. So it’s a natural place for us to be.”
The global project management and construction company counts among its projects Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago, the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York and the American Tobacco Campus and Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham while committing to sustainable development everywhere it operates. Lend Lease invests directly in clean technologies, such as solar, wind and construction design solutions, and installs them in its own projects as well as those of other developers.
As a founding member of President Obama’s and the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge, Lend Lease has committed to reducing energy consumption at its military housing properties by 20 percent within the next three to five years. The company owns more than 40,000 single-family homes and other properties at Department of Defense locations, including Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.
“When you make a commitment like that, it spurs innovation that is pretty amazing,” Stawniczy said. “What we have to do is look for technologies that will make those goals a reality. Many of our partners, like Schneider Electric and ABB, are members of the cluster. Membership allows intelligence to be shared at a level that’s pretty intimate.”
New entrepreneur member Green Energy Corp., co-located in Raleigh and Eugene, Ore., engineers and designs microgrids and utilizes its cloud-based, open source software platform to monitor, optimize and maintain one or a fleet of microgrids. Green Energy Corp’s Microgrid as a Service (MaaS) provides subscription-based software, financing and engineering services to rapidly deploy microgrids worldwide.
Microgrids are small-scale, on-site power generation systems that can use renewable sources. They can be used in conjunction with or as a backup to utility grids to reduce costs and operate sustainably. Commercial developers use Green Energy Corp.’s microgrids to develop sustainable communities of all kinds – cities and towns, industrial and commercial complexes, and residential communities.
“The microgrid sector is where considerable growth will occur in the new era of distributed generation,” said President and COO Shawn Mohr. “Our focus is to make available and deploy microgrids to the masses, both domestically and internationally. We see this region becoming a major center in making our goals reality.”
Founder, Chairman and CEO Peter Gregory says membership in the RTCC is the ideal mechanism for connecting with companies and organizations involved in this rapidly growing technology, and it offers mutual benefit.
“Our approach is providing enabling software that can work with anybody and everybody,” Gregory said. “By participating with a lot of companies that are playing in this space, we can better understand what they are doing and align with them, and they may be able to open up channels for us with their customer base.”
